Open Regional Journal welcomes carefully framed pitches about regional geography and identity. We are interested in work that helps readers understand a place through evidence and clear explanation, not a list of destinations or a string of unsupported claims.
What we welcome
Pitch explainers on landforms, regional boundaries, place names, local materials or the connections between neighbouring places. A proposal should have one central question, a defined geographic scope and a clear reason the subject will interest a general reader. Comparisons are welcome when the basis for comparing places is made explicit.
Make the pitch useful
Send a short summary of the proposed piece, its main point, the section it might fit and the kinds of sources you would use. Flag any uncertainty, contested terminology or limits in the available information. Do not send a complete draft unless we have asked for one. We cannot promise publication or a response by a particular date.
How to send it
Send proposals through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Include the working title and a concise outline in your message. Please do not include private or confidential material.
A region is more than a line on a map
We look at the land, names, borders and connections that give regions their character. Start with one visible detail, then follow what it can tell you.
